Dick Tracy (1990)

This whole film looks and is based upon comic book characters and the over colourisation of the city and costumes adds to this effect. Charlie Korsmo is, of course, excellent as the 'kid' or 'eating machine'. However, Al Pacino's portrayal as Big Boy Caprice was worthy of an Oscar for best supporting actor. A well executed and unusual film.

Du er ikke alene (1978)

A film dealing with love between boys and, therefore, definitely not from the USA or UK stable! A Danish effort with some great boys in it with delicate and superb acting from Agenso and Bjerg, the two main actors. Filmed in the 70s it offers a good insight into the gear worn by and the hairstyles and flared trousers displayed by boys at that time. The ending is beautiful and something that cries out to be brought more to the fore of public discussion especially in view of the present witch hunt.

El Espinazo del Diablo (2001)

One of the few boy films that is genuinely spooky. Sad and true to life as so many foreign films tend to be, 'The Devil's Backbone' brings out great performances from the boy actors involved.

Fanny och Alexander (1982)

An excellent film with drama both real and supernatural. Bertil Guve does very well as the character through whose eyes the story is mostly seen. You can believe in this well off family from the early 1900s.

I Am David (2003)

Another of those films that rests squarely on the shoulders of its main boy actor. Ben Tibber, who plays David, does a decent job though not a performance that would grant him an Oscar! It is a journey film of a boy who escapes from a camp in Bulgaria and makes his way to Denmark. The plot is implausible and Tibber's posh accent implausible as well in the context of the plot but that doesn't mean you can't sit back and enjoy this film. It portrays the enduring spirit of a child in a world that is strange to him. This was Ben Tibber's first big role and he rose to the occasion with merit.

Idi i smotri (1985)

A typical Russian movie - dramatic and grim. Florya, the boy partisan, is a demanding part for young Alexei Kravchenko but he gives an outstanding performance. In fact, his face physically ages during the film after all the horrors of war he witnesses. Definitely an actor worthy of an Oscar nomination.

Io non ho paura (2002)

A marvellous Italian film with the lead boy, Giuseppe Cristiano, looking every inch your typical Italian boy. He plays Michele who finds the kidnapped son of a rich couple in a deep hole in the countryside. The twist in the tale really brings you up with a jolt and you fear, at first, how this will affect the relationship between the two boys. Filmed in the beautiful Italian landscape of cornfields and expansive blue skies it is a delight to watch. The ending might appear a little too 'Hollywoodish' but that doesn't detract too much from the overall plot.

Jet Boy (2001)

One of the few films actually dealing with a boy hustler without moralising. Branden Nadon's performance is outstanding and the developing relationship between him and the man, Dylan Walsh, is well handled. The plot is gritty with no punches barred even though the boyloving men are portrayed as dismissive of any affection and coercively brutal.

L.I.E. (2001)

A fine movie made all the better because it deals with the controversial subject of man/boy love. Paul Dano and Brian Cox are superb in their respective parts although, of course, the 'nasty' boylover has to die in the end ... [groan]

Last Action Hero (1993)

Although Austin O'Brien isn't the most commonly seen of boy actors, he does excel in 'Last Action Hero'. The whole fantasy set up is marvellously done with lots of cinematic tricks making this picture a gem and an unusual one at that. Schwarzenegger and O'Brien are ably supported by British smoothie, Charles Dance and even a cameo performance from Ian McKellen. Even the way all American films telephone numbers begin with 555 is made a joke. The action and the growing relationship between the fictional hero and the boy are well managed by the director.

A must for any boy film collector's shelf.

The Last Legion (2007)

Okay, it's not historically accurate but then I wouldn't expect that in a sword and hero romp like 'The Last Legion'. The way the story of the boy emperor, Romulus, tied in with the King Arthur legend was neatly done. Thomas Sangster, as always, did a great performance and as long as you went with the flow, as it were, it was an entertaining film. One drawback was the woman warrior played by Aishwarya Rai who looked like she had just stepped out of a beauty parlour. The opening shot of Sangster standing on the shoulder of that gigantic statue was wonderful. The computerised Hadrian's Wall may have looked a bit artificial but then we have no exact records of what the wall looked like in its heyday. If you have to be a bodyguard like Colin Firth then you can't do better than being one to the delectable Thomas Sangster!

Låt den rätte komma in (2008)

This is one of those movies that would be great even if it wasn't a boy movie! Kare Hedebrant is outstanding as Oskar a role he plays with innocence and charm but still able to put on the character's aggressive side when he wants. The opening scenes in the bedroom where Oskar wanders around in his undies testifies to the Swedish broadmindedness. The scene at the end in the swimming pool is really horrific. What a waste of two nice Swedish boys! I guess you wonder if Oskar is destined to become another run around for Eli, the vampire. I hope not.

Lockie Leonard (2007)

An absolute hoot with all the embarrassment and pains of growing up performed marvellously by Sean Keenan who is excellent as Lockie Leonard. Corey McKernan as his younger brother, Philip, offers great support, too. Nicely filmed and wonderfully showing off the great Australian outdoors of sea and surf. Good series that keeps to a high standard.

Lord of the Flies (1963)

One of the classic boy films made with a bunch of ordinary British schoolboys who, apparently, had a great time making it. Tom Chapin as Jack is and looks good as the leader of the hunters. A proper little fascist against whom Ralph (James Aubrey)is a well meaning wimp.

It is a matter of debate whether schoolboys, left to their own devices, would deteriorate to the level shown in the film. Golding has been criticised for painting too gloomy a picture of what would happen to children in those circumstances.

Lost in Space (1965-1968)

This was one of the few memorable boy TV shows featuring as it did the wonderful talent of young Billy Mumy. Coupled with the over-the-top performance from Jonathan Harris as Dr Smith and not forgetting the robot, they almost carried the show between the three of them. The rest of the characters were pretty staid by comparison and reduced to little more than cyphers. It would seem Will's parents shouldn't have let their son anywhere near Dr Smith being the cowardly, selfish character he represented. But this unusual combination only proved to be the essence of the series without which it would have got nowhere.

The imaginative props look dated now but that takes nothing away from the high standard of entertainment provided. A real TV classic.

The Man Without a Face (1993)

Obviously a film that is a must on any boy film collector's shelf. The subject matter dealing with love between a man and a boy is controversial enough for a start. I wonder what made the book's author, Isabelle Holland, actually decide to write on such a subject. Apparently, in the book, the teacher does have sex with the boy but, of course, such 'shocking' things could not appear in a nice Hollywood movie.

Great acting from Nick Stahl who possibly was worthy of a BA Oscar nomination for his performance. The build up of the relationship is well handled by Mel Gibson, the director.

Martian Child (2007)

A good film with wonderful acting from a very young Bobby Coleman. Although improbable, you always have the sneaking question whether David is a Martian child or not? Some interesting extras on the DVD, too.

Morte a Venezia (1971)

A wonderfully shot film with superb period detail and directed by Visconti at a leisurely pace. This is a classic boy film which should repose on the DVD shelf of any worthy collector. Bjorn Andresen is of course outstandingly beautiful most notably in the scenes where he's parading around the beach in his swimwear. I kept wondering when Dirk Bogarde's Aschenbach, the silly old coot, was going to say something to Tadzio. Let's face it, the boy was doing enough to give Aschenbach more than a nod and a wink! A lot of people complain of the film's slow pace but it didn't bother me. Apart from the two main actors, the other highlight of the film was when the singing quartet saunter among the hotel guests and serenade Tadzio who looks most elegant in his uniform. A fine film.

The Mummy Returns (2001)

Another of these good adventure films only this sequel to 'The Mummy' has Freddie Boath to entertain us. Boath is a relatively unknown cute moppet of a boy actor who bounces around the screen, playing his part as Rick O'Connell's son with ease. A good romp and wonderfully watchable.
