The Last Legion
(2007)
Country: UK
Genre: War
Synopsis
Swordfights, battles, and betrayal fuel The Last Legion, which tells the story of the last emperor of Rome: a slight 12-year-old boy who is a descendent of Julius Caesar. Protected by commander Aurelius and guided to an extent by the wizard Ambrosinus, Romulus is an unlikely leader. Too inexperienced to rule wisely, he also shows little of the fortitude and courage needed to be a great warrior. After Romulus finds Caesar's sword--the legendary excaliburnus--he begins a search for the fabled last legion that will help him save Rome.

Solid entertainment with a great turn from Thomas Sangster.
My Movie Rating: 7 / 10Thomas Sangster and Ben Kingsley -- Excellent film!
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Okay, it's not historically accurate but then I wouldn't expect that in a sword and hero romp like 'The Last Legion'. The way the story of the boy emperor, Romulus, tied in with the King Arthur legend was neatly done. Thomas Sangster, as always, did a great performance and as long as you went with the flow, as it were, it was an entertaining film. One drawback was the woman warrior played by Aishwarya Rai who looked like she had just stepped out of a beauty parlour. The opening shot of Sangster standing on the shoulder of that gigantic statue was wonderful. The computerised Hadrian's Wall may have looked a bit artificial but then we have no exact records of what the wall looked like in its heyday. If you have to be a bodyguard like Colin Firth then you can't do better than being one to the delectable Thomas Sangster!
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10I put off watching this for ages because of it's low rating and poor reviews. Well I rather liked it. I'm not an action fan so I was more interested in the tale and the characters. Many viewers seem to have taken this film too seriously and criticized it for it's lack of historical accuracy. The film is a fantasy with a few historical references and geographical locations added in to give it a sense of 'reality'. I thought it was entertaining and I'd watch it again. Tomas Sangster was fine.
