Dog Days of Summer (2007)

Disappointing. I wish I could have enjoyed it more. The boys were wonderful, but the plot creaked along with too much of a moralistic, cliche' tone. "All is not what it seems in what looks like an ideal little town." I've seen it done before.

Dreamcatcher (2003)

Having read the book, they sure could have used more flashbacks to develop the touching relationship between the boys and Duddits - and scrapped that silly ending. They needed more time, so I have to agree this shouldn't have been done as a cinema feature. Even as chopped as it stands it runs 2-1/4 hours. Reece Thompson is a delight, even though he is just the opposite in appearance to young Beaver as I envisioned him.

(In the book, I love Duddits's mom's assessment of the four boys who took the time to be her son's friends - "Angels with kind hearts and dirty mouths.")

It's a pleasure to see Scott - but spiders are NOT funny!

Ender's Game (2013)

Granting the need to condense and change a novel to fit the needs of film storytelling, there must be a way of doing it without tearing out the soul of the novel. This has happened here, particularly with the ending. Crucial information is left out and leaves the story with just a generalized anti-war message. To say more would spoil the novel for those who haven't read it.

"War bad. Peace good. Tarzan know."

Eno nakano bokuno mura (1995)

The boys are very cute. The movie is anecdotal and episodic in the extreme and some of the episodes scream out for closure, which never comes.

Ginostra (2002)

Well, I bothered. Again, a plodding movie desperately in need of editing. Or a shower scene.

Harlequin (1980)

Pretty fair, a re-take on the Rasputin story. DVD director commentary is interesting. I was puzzled because I knew it was an Australian movie, an early Simon Wincer film (later did Lonesome Dove, Free Willy & others)but with an American look & feel to it and lots of American accents. The commentary explains this was deliberate, trying for a generic international appeal without looking provincially Australian. I still chuckled over the presence of Broderick Crawford as the bad guy.
