Kes (1969)
A classic. At times it seems more of a documentary than a movie, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing - it's just the style of the movie's direction.
Also, I couldn't go without mentioning Brian Glover - his role as the demonic sports teacher brought back a lot of painful memories of cold winter mornings on the football field.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10King of the Hill (1993)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Kolya (1996)
Just a gorgeous movie :)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Last Christmas (1999)
Fantastic drama/fantasy along the lines of A Christmas Carol. Brilliant debut by Phillip Dowling as well.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)
I'd agree with Teddy that they could have done more with the film. But very enjoyable all the same.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Little Man Tate (1991)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10The Long Day Closes (1992)
Fantastic “stream of consciousness” drama about the life of a lonely boy.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10The Lost Prince (2003)
Very well written, and well acted by all concerned - an interesting insight into a not so well known part of British royal family history.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)
Fantastic. Compared with the first Mad Max, directorially it does play hopscotch between Hollywood and Australia, but still bloody good :)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Man of the House (1995)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10My Family (2000-2011)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10My Left Foot (1989)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Nanny McPhee (2005)
Very entertaining family comedy. Has the happy ending (sorry for the spoiler!), and moral lessons concomitant with films of this genre, but these aren't entirely at the expense of plot, jokes and charm on the part of the child actors, particularly Master Sangster :-)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey (1988)
A film set in Cumbria, in the UK, in the 14th century, made by a film company from New Zealand, and starring a cast from New Zealand. A fantastic film, which I probably would have missed had I not mistaken it at the cinema for the film starring Joey Cramer (who, incidentally is for some reason referred to as "fat" (?) in one of the reviews above by someone who thought others would make the same mistake).
Quite apart from the superb Scots-border accents, the film is a captivating concept which I think would appeal to the dreamer and explorer in most of us. I managed to find plenty of reviews, but no screen shots, as yet, and I've yet to scour the credits to see where it was filmed
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10North (1994)
Elijah at his light hearted best.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Oliver Beene (2003-2004)
The nostalgia of The Wonder Years with the anarchic comedy of Malcolm in the Middle. That's what I'd heard about it - but I have to say it's more than that. Again, the producers have seen the light and not bothered with canned laughter, meaning we have the opportunity to laugh at what WE find funny.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Oliver Twist (1999)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Oliver! (1968)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Pay It Forward (2000)
Very good performances by all leads, especially Haley. Well directed and a good storyline.
Would've been a fantastic movie if it weren't for the closing scene.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10A Perfect World (1993)
Fantastic movie of the ilk boy teaches man about love & friendship, man teaches boy about the world.
Some very touching moments, and T.J is superb.
