Mino
(1986)
TV Mini-Series
AKA: Mino - Il piccolo Alpino
Country: Italy
Genre: War Drama
Synopsis
Italy 1914: In a mountain village the Rasi family is caught in an avalanche and little Mino is separated from his parents. A smuggler called Rico saves the boy and takes him home. When the First World War breaks out, Rico has to go to the front. Mino follows him, and eventually becomes an Alpino (a member of the 'Alpini', the Italian Army's mountain infantry) and the unit's mascot. When Mino discovers that his father had not been killed in the avalanche, as he had hitherto believed, he sets out on an odyssey to find his parents.
Notes
- Based on the 1926 novel "Il piccolo Alpino" ("The Little Alpino") by the Italian writer Salvator Gotta (1887-1980). This miniseries was the second screen adaptation of Gotta's novel, and the only one to date for television. The first adaptation - for the cinema - was Piccolo alpino (1940).
- "Mino" was transmitted as six episodes in the German-dubbed version ("Mino - Ein Junge zwischen den Fronten"/"Mino - A Boy Between the Fronts") and in four episodes in the Italian version ("Mino - Il piccolo Alpino"/"Mino - The Little Alpino"). There have since been DVD releases for both versions. The English subtitles below are for the German version.

Rather sombre towards the end - but then it is about WWI! A gorgeous production.
