Mostly Ghostly (2008)

Not one of the best boy movies.

Mystic River (2003)

Another semi-boy film in which boys play men in their childhoods. Even Clark and Murphy only had minor parts. Good thriller with fine performance from Sean Penn but as this is primarily an adult acted film it cannot be awarded more than half the stars, that is 5 .

Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010)

This was a so-so sequel that was decidely without a lot of the charm of the original 'Nanny McPhee'. Asa Butterfield was good but was almost acted off the screen by the amusing performance of the oddly named Eros Vlahos as the posh Cyril.

Neverland (2011)

What a boring TV two-parter this is. Despite Charlie Rowe's best efforts this floundering prequel attempt at 'Peter Pan' is hopelessly mixed up with scenes suddenly cut in as an afterthought while the storyline lurches from one boring note to another. I give it five because of Charlie and the equally attractive Chase Willoughby playing Nibs.

The New Adventures of Pinocchio (1999)

This seemed to be a remake of the 'Adventures of Pinocchio' starring Jonathan Taylor Thomas. While there were enough laughs and special effects this film lacked the smoothness of the 1996 version. Gabriel Thomson was good in his part but overall there was a shoddiness about this production.

Once Not Far From Home (2004)

A nicely filmed short though I could've done without the loud, tinkly music. It reminded me a bit of the cartoon 'Up' but there was little depth in the rendering of childhood to old age in this film. In fact, you knew that was the girl's house after many years but no indication they lived there. Could have been better.

Radio Flyer (1992)

I reckon this must be the first film for Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazzello as they are so young. It has all the makings of a dramatic plot except it goes way off course. The abusive stepfather and two brothers who are far too cute. In fact the whole film is too cutesy with the boys uttering lines no kid would. Then the ending goes into the realms of fantasy that just doesn't add up. I believe 'Radio Flyer' bombed at the US box office and I'm not surprised.

Rascal (1969)

Beware of boys-with-dogs films but this one has Billy Mumy in it so that makes it okay.

Real Steel (2011)

What could have been an interesting storyline is wasted with this film. Having never heard of Dakota Goyo before, he gave a real acting performance here even if his character, Max, was the type of precocious kid you longed for the robot to swot into oblivion. Whether the robot, Atom, really saved the boy's life when he slid down the cliff is never followed up. It was evident that Atom was more than your ordinary fighting robot but neither father or son seemed interested in that possible aspect. They only wanted the machine to get in the ring and knock hell out of another machine. The final fight was a farce and totally predictable. How could Zeus, the gigantic World Champion robot boxer, suddenly begin to run out of power in the last round? In the end he was completely helpless and little Atom went on to win in true American style.

I echo 'josephk's sentiments entirely.

Richie Rich's Christmas Wish (1998)

Sequels are often poor attempts at trying to equal the original - 'Christmas Wish' is no exception. Although David Gallagher and Jake Richardson do their very best to lift this film off the ground they are defeated by the sheer banality of the script. Better handled by a better director might have saved the day. It also lacks the presence of Jonathan Hyde as the butler this part being replaced by an aged Keene Curtis who is actually in a wheelchair in the final scenes!

Robosapien: Rebooted (2008)

After seeing Bobby Coleman in 'Martian Child' what a let down this film was. After one viewing, my DVD went straight to the charity shop.

Senza ragione (1972)

An unusual film to star handsome Mark Lester although that might be because one of the producers is Michael Lester. A real 70s knock-and-drag-'em-out kind of film with atrocious background music. Not very comfortable for Mark to act in with some rough outdoor scenes. Notable for the scene where Mark undresses in front of the mirror.

The Shining (1980)

This film was recently shown on BBC TV. While the photography is good the acting is best described as 'over the top' by the adult actors. Danny Lloyd is great in his part but I don't think he knew much about what was going on.

Snow (2006)

A somewhat 'arty' short with little dialogue, so little dialogue I wonder the father didn't scream the woods down at the death of his son. Or was the boy dead?

Treasure Island (1972)

One wonders why Orson Welles would lower himself to appearing in a Treasure Island movie. However, unknown fifties boy actor, Kim Burfield, does well as Jim Hawkins.

Tree House Time Machine (2017)

Quite a good short though the No 1 question is where did they all go? Apart from the shouty dialogue Steele Stebbins looks great and very attractive.

Way Down South (1939)

Another slice of nostalgia in this vintage movie which is redolent of the attitudes to black people in the thirties. The plot is farcical and could do with Bobby Breen singing more often than he does here. However, his rendering of an old Southern song about Lou-Lou-Lou Louisiana is notable.

The Young Messiah (2016)

I didn't think Adam Greaves-Neal's accent added much to the character he was portraying, it sounded too, too British and somewhat amateurish. However, never mind Adam, who the hell was that dusky beauty playing Eleazer at the beginning of the film? Jacopo Alaimo was stunningly beautiful and the obvious choice for the main role but then these casting directors do make mistakes now and again.

The Boys from Brazil (1978)

One of those films you either like or hate but hardly scraping in as a boy movie I would've thought. Usually I give a poor boy film 5 for the fact there's a boy actor in it but Jeremy Black hardly appears at all except for the ending. However, he can always say he appeared on set with Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier.

The Last Airbender (2010)

One of those boy films that falls with a thud. Noah Ringer is cute but the American accents don't fit in to the story somehow. The direction is abrupt between scenes and some of the karate prancing about looks almost comical. The sets and special effects are good but the overall acting is hammy - except for Noah of course. It seem M Night Shyamalan has never recovered from his success with 'The Sixth Sense'.

I only bought the DVD because the market stall was selling DVDs 3 for 50p. Thank heavens I did as the DVD extras are disappointing with Noah not even being interviewed. The four points are for him alone ... another boy actor of whom I have not heard.
