Way Down South
(1939)

Country: USA

Genre: Musical

IMDb

Synopsis

The film is set in antebellum Louisiana, where young Tim Reid's inheritance is highly coveted by a crooked attorney. With the help of kindly Cajun innkeeper Jacques Bouton, Tim is able to foil the villain, with time left over for a number of Southern-fried tunes. The film's attitude towards slavery is astonishing, inasmuch as the film was co-written by Clarence Muse (one of the more militant black performers in Hollywood) and African American poet Langston Hughes!

Dividing Bar

A curio that veers between the sublime and the ridiculous. Breen's voice was quite mature and rich by the time this was made and his expressiveness and smooth technique well developed.

Dividing Bar

Another slice of nostalgia in this vintage movie which is redolent of the attitudes to black people in the thirties. The plot is farcical and could do with Bobby Breen singing more often than he does here. However, his rendering of an old Southern song about Lou-Lou-Lou Louisiana is notable.
