December Boys (2007)

Daniel Radcliffe did his best with the part he was given. He played 'Maps' quite movingly. Trouble was two of the boy characters were hardly developed at all and the film could have done without the religious mystique. I reckon it must have been chilly during shooting by the Australian coast because the boys are always wearing their shirts in every seaside scene. There was potential for a good plot but it was wasted by the director and screen writers. NOT a must have for a collector's shelf.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (2012)

This was a bummer. Slapstick and often cringing jokes randomly stuck together and Zachary Gordon starting to look too old for the part. Irritating older brother too prominent. Lack of support from the essential characters, Rowley (Zoo Wee Mama) and Fregley, which is an absolute necessity that helped make the success of the first film, combine to make this sequel barely worthy of five stars.

Ender's Game (2013)

Having read two of the Enders books this was a pale imitation. Definitely not one of Asa Butterfield's better films. The story was told in a way that anyone not having read the books would be hard put to make head or tail of it. The battle games were not given sufficient explanation as to the rules of play. Most of the actors supposedly playing children were too old for their parts.

To cap it all the DVD, while having two commentaries, had no interview with Asa. Boo.

Les enfants de l'Histoire (2016)

Two great looking boys playing their parts but, as I don't know any French, had no idea what they were talking about. So I give it five for the two boys.

Gabriel & Me (2001)

Personally, an interesting film as the pier scenes near the end were shot near where I live. Sean Landless played his part well though some might have found his accent somewhat repetitive. Nicely filmed with Billy Connolly popping up in a boy film - again - just as he did in 'A Series of Unfortunate Events', 'Fido' and 'Muppets Treasure Island'.

Germania anno zero (1948)

Either I'm used to modern film making or this isn't the 'golden oldie' others believe. The scenes were sketchy and abruptly joined though the DVD I saw wasn't remastered. I understand the director's difficulty in making such a film in such dreadful circumstances but the overall effect was still patchy. Edmund Moeschke was beautiful in his shorts and did a good job considering he was not a professional actor. I must presume he was a German boy from his surname so was he dubbed into Italian? A good storyline but insufficient development of the characters marred the production. I give the film 5 for Edmund.

Hansel & Gretel (2002)

Could have been better with a bit of editing of the Sandman scenes. He started to become a bit of a bore after a while. Jacob Smith was good as Hansel. Interesting to note that the cover picture posted above has Jacob Smith to the fore and rightly so, of course. My DVD front cover has no such thing and Jacob isn't even credited although Dakota Fanning is. Well really. Also the DVD has no extras - boo.

The Hole (2009)

I didn't think much of this movie at all despite Nathan Gamble's presence. The Hole plot had possible potential at first but soon developed into a B horror flick with lots of questions left unanswered. Who was the little ghost girl and just what was supposed to be going on when the older boy finally got to the bottom of the Hole? Nathan must do better though I don't suppose he worried too much when he was passing his nice, big cheque across the bank counter!

I Am Gabriel (2012)

Just watched this on YouTube so who is Gavin Casalegno? An extremely good looking boy actor who didn't have to do much in the way of differing facial expressions but starring in a lot of religious nonsense. Nothing was explained on a scientific or biological basis just bland acceptance. The only good thing about 'Heaven', apparently, is that it has some gorgeous looking boy angels.

I give it 5 only because of Gavin Casalegno, the film being a load of superstitious rubbish.

Jaws (1975)

'Jaws' a boy movie? Well, I suppose if you stretch a point it could be classed as that. However, this is still only a semi-boy film as it is mainly acted by adults. The film itself is a classic and worthy of 9 stars but, as this is a BOY actors forum, it cannot be awarded more than half the stars at 5. This is one of the classics of cinema though the boy parts are reduced, in one instance, to ending up in hospital with shock and, in another, providing the shark with a tasty meal - poor Jeffrey Voorhees.

Just Ask For Diamond (1988)

An interesting takeoff of private eye films. Colin Dale is not the best of actors as his delivery is somewhat stilted. He's almost laughing at his own jokes before he says them. The plot is interesting though drags in places and I think it would have been better without the older brother. Good support from quite a number of well known British actors.

The Karate Kid (2010)

A poor remake of the far superior 1984 film starring Ralph Macchio sadly missing from the BA listings.

Life During Wartime (2009)

Boy films released on DVD under 'Artificial Eye' are usually of a good standard but not this one. 'Life During Wartime' is definitely in the 'arty farty' category. This could have been an intriguing film of family relationships but never seems to get anywhere. Freckle faced Dylan Riley Snyder is good in his part of Timmy who seems to have paedophiles on the brain. However, the nonsense told him by his mother about never letting a man touch him is amply demonstrated by the ridiculous scene near the end of the film where a man does just that and the boy screams his head off. Also one of those movies that finishes up in the air with no proper ending. With only a trailer for extras there is no interview with Dylan. Boo.

The Little Prince (1974)

A mediocre film with outrageous singing by Richard Kiley who is not helped by the poor songs in the first place. However, Steven Warner gives an enchanting performance as the Little Prince. The DVD, though not recommended for the devotee of the boy actor's shelf, also lacks any extras. It's main importance is the fact it seems to be the only boy film that Steven Warner starred in.

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)

I am unable to give this film a high rating as it isn't really a BOY film more an adult action movie. The action is good and the first time I viewed this film I wasn't sure of Emil Minty's actual gender. He did marvellous as the little kid but, unfortunately, there were no extras or interviews with the DVD. Therefore, as the film is mainly adult material I have given five stars for Emil's performance.

Mail to the Chief (2000)

Another of those boy meets President movies though nowhere nearly as good as 'First Kid' with Brock Pierce.

Manny's Orphans (1978)

Just watched the football match on YouTube so cannot really score this film so I've given it a neutral 5. Interesting to see the boys in 1978, nearly all of them far better looking than today's boys, wearing neat shorts and, of course, the usual script where the winning goal comes in the last second.

Meatballs (1979)

Lots of American brash humour which didn't always come off and slightly disjointed scenes. Chris Makepeace was good not so much with his acting but how he looked in those white socks and shorts. Boys knew how to dress in the 70s. I like Bill Murray but he's been in better films.

The Mighty Ducks (1992)

A typical Disney film run to a typical clockwork formula - the underdogs rising up to win in the dying seconds of the game. A game which is farcical to watch and, unfortunately, has the boys grossly overdressed. I agree the boys were cute BUT mainly on the Hawks team! Aaron Schwartz and Joshua Jackson stood out among the plain-janes and fatties. A poor film all round with a stone faced Emilio Estevez obviously not enjoying his part as the coach. Not a patch on the other losers-win-through, much funnier film 'Air Bud' with Kevin Zegers. The kids wore better gear, too, even if we had to put up with the damned dog.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

A film that rests too much on sheer weirdness and special effects while the storyline comes a poor second. Asa Butterfield's American accent seemed unreal as though he had been dubbed by an older actor. A plot with great potential wasted.
