This is a decent science fiction movie which confronts what, for us, must be the worst catastrophe we can imagine: the destruction of the entire world. No last minute reprieve either - no shallow, cocksure all-American hero with muscles on his muscles to save us all at the last moment. This is a very cerebral film, which seems to suggest that nothing is wholly meaningless or wasted, but that everything is connected in some great plan. Nicolas Cage is superb, and Chandler Canterbury shows his acting mettle, particularly in the very moving final scene between father and son.

The last half hour or so of this film was a major letdown. The first half was an interesting scifi/mystery/thriller and Chandler Canterbury was a plus.

I've rarely felt such a roller-coster of emotions while watching a movie. Unfortunately I don't mean that as praise in the way it's often used in tacky reviews. There were elements of the story that I thought were quite interesting and could have made an excellent film. Unfortunately, I found myself getting angry at the characters (and the writer/director) for doing incredibly stupid things. When one of the characters we're supposed to care about gets killed near the end, I found myself actually cheering, because by that point the characters had done so many stupid things that I felt they truly deserved to die.

Aside from that, the movie suffers from some low-budget special effects, a fact that I would have easily overlooked if the writing and acting had not been so poor as well.
