The Adventures of Spin and Marty
(1955)
TV Series
Country: USA
Synopsis
Privileged boy Marty Markham (David Stollery) arrives at the Triple R Ranch with a chip on his shoulder, and has some adjusting to do to fit in with the other boys.
Notes
- Based on the 1942 novel "Marty Markham" by Lawrence Edward Watkin
- Broadcast in 25 episodes as a segment of "The Mickey Mouse Club" show in 1955, the popularity of this miniseries led to two sequels, "The Further Adventures of Spin and Marty" (1956) and "The New Adventures of Spin and Marty" (1957).
- When the series (at first simply "Marty Markham") was in production, Tim Considine was screen tested for the role of Marty. But he wasn't comfortable acting the role of the 'privileged kid', and expressed his desire to play another character, Spin Evans. He suggested David Stollery as a suitable choice for Marty, and Stollery was indeed hired. Since Considine at the time was Disney's big star, the role of Spin Evans (which was fairly peripheral in Watkin's original story) was beefed up, and the series retitled "The Adventures of Spin and Marty".
- Western Publishing published several comic book adventures of Spin and Marty, which continued even after the second sequel to the original series had ended.
- The series is not to be confused with the 2000 TV movie "The New Adventures of Spin and Marty: Suspect Behavior", which bore no resemblance to the original, and which was in fact based on a novel by Paul Zindel called "The Undertaker's Gone Bananas".
