This movie is the result of the events referred to in the documentary "Streetwise" (1984). In that documentary Dewayne Pomeroy was trying to reconcile with his father even though his father was in prison. While filming the documentary, Dewayne got himself involved in a petty crime and was sent to a juvenile jail where he committed suicide. The character that Edward Furlong is playing in this movie is based on Dewayne's life.
