Dividing Bar

Intelligent, funny in spots though also sad, and beautifully shot, with a nice bit of self-reference in the roll-of-film subplot. The technique of cutting off an important scene not at the end of the action, but when we know enough to surmise what the end will be, reminded me of Maurice Pialat (L'Enfance nue). Boy actor fans will notice the poster for Chaplin's The Kid in the cinema! The brothers' closeness is lovely to watch. The director is Mahamat Saleh Haroun, who directed and starred in Chad's first-ever feature film, Bye Bye Africa, in 1999. The only other major Chadian director is Issa Serge Coelo, who has made Daresalam and DP75: Tartina City, both very good. Good later films by Haroun include Daratt, A Screaming Man, A Season in France and the TV movie Sex, Okra and Salted Butter.
