My actual favourite film of all time, so no words can adequately express what it means to me. Maarten Smit is just amazing - as is Andrew Kelley.

10 / 10 Rudi van Dantzig's autobiographical novel of the same name gives us the real, complex story; the director has stated that in this film he aimed to tell a simpler, happier tale. And despite a few anachronisms -- the Canadian flag! -- he manages it admirably well, helped by Maarten Smit's fine performance. When the film was released he received quite a few letters from men and women telling him that as kids they'd had experiences like Jeroen's.

9 / 10 A definite must see! A boy is uprooted from his home in Amsterdam and sent to a farming town to live until the end of the war. It's an engaging film, it not only explores the boy's sexual awakenings, Jeroen is far from home too, as well as Walt, so they immediately connect and become friends.
For A Lost Soldier is a deeply heartfelt romance between a man and his young friend!
I highly recommend this gem of a movie!
