Synopsis
In the 1950s, violence and terror escalate in French Algeria, as the Berber Arab people fight for independence from French colonial rule.
Notes
- Banned for five years in France, this film was the recipient of several awards (though not all initial critical reception of the film was positive). The film was ranked 48th in 'Sight & Sound' magazine's 2012 decennial poll of the Greatest Films of All Time as voted by film critics, and was ranked 120th in 'Empire' magazine's 2015 list of the 500 Greatest Movies of All Time. It was also selected by film experts as one of the "100 Italian films to be saved", a project launched in Italy in 2006 to identify the 100 films that contributed most to the collective memory of the country between 1942 and 1978.
