- Written and directed by the English film and television director Peter Watkins (b. 1935), "The War Game" was provisionally scheduled to be transmitted by the BBC in October of 1965. However, the film caused dismay within the BBC and also within government, and was subsequently withdrawn for being too "horrifying" for television audiences. The film premiered at the National Film Theatre in London, on 13 April 1966, and was subsequently shown at international film festivals, winning a clutch of awards, including an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature (1967). The movie was eventually transmitted by the BBC on 31 July 1985, a week before the 40th Anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. "The War Game" has subsequently won widespread critical acclaim, and was placed 27th in a poll of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes drawn up by the British Film Institute in 2000, as voted by industry professionals.
