Les carottes sont cuites
(1956)
Country: France
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis
12-year-old child prodigy Edmond Boyer is a famous orchestra conductor, whose life is entirely organised and controlled by his parents, who, for purely commercial reasons, rename him 'Ded Boyeski'. When the family arrive in Paris, the boy rebels against his parents, escapes from his bourgeois apartment and is accepted by a gang of street kids. When, subsequently, he is kidnapped for a ransom, the gang of kids must use all their resourcefulness to free him.
Notes
- The phrase "Les carottes sont cuites" (literally, "the carrots are cooked") is a French phrase equivalent to the English "the goose is cooked", "the writing's on the wall", or "the game's up". In the 18th century, the phrase "avoir ses carottes cuites" ("having one's carrots cooked") meant being on the verge of death - since carrots were cooked to accompany meat dishes, the implication was that the dying person would soon be ready to be eaten with the carrots! Over time, the phrase, altered to "Les carottes sont cuites", came to denote any hopeless situation.
- The Region 2 DVD release of this film (Amazon UK link at top right of this page) does not have any subtitles.
