Synopsis

The great case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce drags on in the Court of Chancery, an all-consuming and destructive obsession to all involved - including to Tulkinghorn, who is acting for Lord Dedlock in the case, and suspects Lady Dedlock of harbouring a dark secret connected with a man known only as 'Nemo' (Latin for 'Nobody'). Setting out to discover the identity of 'Nemo', Tulkinghorn finds that the only person who knew him is a homeless orphan boy who makes a meagre pittance as a crossing sweeper. When Tulkinghorn finds out everything he desires to know, he determines to expose Lady Dedlock - that is, until he is murdered...

Notes

  • Based on the novel of the same name (published in serial form 1852-1853) by the great English writer Charles Dickens (1812-1870). "Bleak House" has been considered by many writers and critics - including such figures as G. K. Chesterton and Harold Bloom - to be Dickens' finest novel.
  • This is the second of three BBC adaptations of Dickens' novel. The others are the 1959 miniseries, which starred Malcolm Knight as Jo, and the 2005 miniseries, with Harry Eden as Jo. All three versions are available on DVD.
