Synopsis

In this, arguably the finest feature film from the great Croatian film director Branko Bauer, a World War II resistance fighter who escapes a train en route to the Jasenovac concentration camp returns to Zagreb in an attempt to find his son Zoran, and then join the partisans in the Croatian hinterland. However, he discovers that Zoran is in an Usta?a boarding school and has been brought up to hate partisans and communists. The hero manages to escape the city with his son, but throughout their journey he is forced to lie to his son about his allegiances.

Widely regarded as a classic of Yugoslav and Croatian cinema, this film won the Golden Arena award for Best Film at the 1956 Pula Film Festival of Yugoslavian Films.
