This was the era of the professional boy soprano, as documented by Stephen Beet; Breen was already a radio star, and this, his first film, is rather more carefully made than his subsequent ones, as nobody knew yet if he'd prove a box-office draw: there are some nicely composed shots, a sweet and simple plot and reasonable attention paid to the musical-training side of things.
