Synopsis
This movie explores a boy's early interest and awareness of sexuality. Unspoiled by the mores and norms of his culture, little Steven Gale observes with innocent but worried curiosity some of the kinkier details of adult life in mid 20th century America. At a time when sexuality was publicly repressed, he glimpses it even in Dottie, his TV comedienne heroine and role model. Steven's other fixation, spanking, manifests itself in his dreams - where he is king having command over Dottie.

This movie was a let down to me. While it wasn't bad it was more like an extended skit that never reached its potential.

Unique and stylish treatment of an important, taboo subject. If I recall correctly, the drawings Stevie does are mostly Haynes's own from when he was a child. Haynes excels as always at recreating 1950s period detail. I think in fact that this is his best film: even the much-praised Carol, while it looks beautiful, is a bit slight and surpassed, in my view, by Apflickorna, Summertime, Kiss Me, Break My Fall, Jamie and Jessie Are Not Together, Lianna, Rafiki, The Half of It, Afternoon Breezes, Girl with Hyacinths, Carmen y Lola, Cocoon, And Breathe Normally and the short films Hi Maya, Viernes Girl, Whale Hello There, Were You Gay in High School? and Came Out, It Rained, Went Back In Again.
