Beautifully shot film and a great ode to the boyish imagination.

This excellent film just goes to show you do not need professionals. These kids literally came off the street to portray their roles and a store-bought camera without sound did all the recording (sound was later dubbed in post production). Richie Andrusco was adorable walking all over Coney Island finding soda bottles to return for cash so he can ride the ponies. Richie would not ever do that today with all the violence and crime that exists more today than back then. Indeed a great film!

One of the first films to portray children with realism. The other two films Morris Engel made are Lovers and Lollipops, in which a seven-year-old girl is shown just as realistically, and Weddings and Babies.
