One of the best films ever to come out of MGM!

Freddie Bartholomew truly was a silver screen legend! Also stars Academy Awards winner Spencer Tracy, Academy Awards winner Lionel Barrymore, Academy Awards winner Melvyn Douglas, and Academy Awards winner Mickey Rooney. Directed by Academy Awards winner Victor Fleming. There are too many other Academy Awards winners among the crew to list.

I'm glad the Director chose Black and White film to make this movie, with B/W the viewer focuses more on the characters than the scenery! My Dad was just 6 yrs. younger than Freddie, and he used say that Freddie was that good playing the brat because was a brat in real life, I had trouble believeing it, because an actor is usually at their best when their playing their stark opposite! This movie has been a beloved classic for decades, and will be for years to come, because it had some of the best actors in hollywood in it! Trivia: The Father of Actor David Carridine (Kung Fu tv series) plays one of the characters in the movie!

A classic film and a rare example of outstanding acting by a boy actor in the 1930s, Freddie Bartholomew. He deserved the Oscar and not Spencer Tracy! Freddie acted his heart out in this film and even his oh so British accent could not deter from that. The tender scene where Spencer calls the boy his 'little fish' brings tears to the eyes. (Wouldn't be allowed today, of course, unless his fisherman pal was police checked!) Absurd! Definitely up there among the ranks of Classic Boy Films.
