One of the various Hugh Grant vehicles; he was good in the fine Merchant Ivory film of Forster's Maurice, but then got into doing his bumbling schtick for Richard Curtis. This one, however, is an interesting departure though it does pale in comparison to really good odd-couple buddy movies such as Alice in the Cities, Young Soul Rebels and Blindspotting. Nicholas Hoult is an excellent young actor and the friendship between his character and Grant's is the central relationship of the film and nicely portrayed; the two actors work really well together and the time-lapse sequence showing their growing friendship is great. Didn't care for the 'gotta conform to have friends' side of the message, though.
My Movie Rating: 7 / 10Good Movie & Nice Picture.
Love it!
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10This just didn't work for me. I didn't connect with any character.
My Movie Rating: 2 / 10I'm retracting the "Don't Bother" status! The first time I watched this film, I didn't get much past the 1st 30min. I just watched it again, all the way through this time, I have to say I can relate to Marcus, I WAS him at his age! e.i. the Social Outcast at school! So I decided to give this movie a break, and raise my rating a point!
My Movie Rating: 3 / 10I believe this film was Nicholas Hoult's acting debut. He plays the boy Marcus wonderfully, catching really well the boy's embarrassment at the goings on of his bohemian mother and the funny scene where he kills a duck with his mum's bread. The scene in the restaurant where Marcus's mother confronts Will (Hugh Grant) about her boy going to his flat all the time was ridiculous. What repurcussions was that going to have for a single man talking about such things in public instead of drawing him to one side? In the book, apparently, the confrontation took place at Will's front door.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10A very nice picture.
