Director Warren Beatty does a stunning job of capturing the look and feel of a comic strip in a live action film. There is a tongue-in-cheek absurdity that infuses everything from the dialogue to the set pieces. The Kid with his dramatic freckles and bright red newsboy cap, and his devotion to Tracy, steals the show, but Pacino as the philosophizing failure of a mob leader and Tess are also highlights. Madonna sings well here and this role is probably just about the entire bandwidth of her acting ability. She is passable until the last scene, which devolves into laugh out loud territory.

The surface aesthetic of this film is a triumph. I love the rogues' gallery of villains, I love Al Pacino as 'Big Boy', and I love Charlie Korsmo as 'The Kid'. However, if there's one criticism of this movie, it is that it is perhaps a little too two-dimensional - too much surface sheen and not quite enough emotional interest. What emotional interest there is in this picture is furnished by the Kid's developing relationship with Dick Tracy. Still, this is an unusual film, which is worth seeing at least once. Has anyone ever told Madonna that she's a rotten actress?

This whole film looks and is based upon comic book characters and the over colourisation of the city and costumes adds to this effect. Charlie Korsmo is, of course, excellent as the 'kid' or 'eating machine'. However, Al Pacino's portrayal as Big Boy Caprice was worthy of an Oscar for best supporting actor. A well executed and unusual film.

Silly film. Fortunately Charlie Korsmo pimped it up a bit.

Kewl movie. If you asked for one word that could describe this movie best, I'd say "Stylish or Smooth". It's always fun to see a slew of major actors sharing the screen. The bright and period costums and sets make it a treat to watch as well. Warren Beatty was born to play Dick tracy, and Charlie (Dick jr) is always a treat watch. He's actually one of my favorite boy actors.
