With his Southern drawl, Lucas Black is spot on in his role as young Frank. He gives able support to Billy Bob Thornton as the simple minded Carl. The DVD extras reveal that Thornton had all the parts filled for his film except a 10 year old kid. He cast Lucas after seeing a video his mother made of her son in their backyard. A great film showing compassion, an unlikely friendship and ultimate tragedy.

Billy Bob said in an Episode of Inside The Actors Studio on A&E network, that he knew a mentally challenged man in his early years, he paterned the Carl character, in voice and Demeanor, after this person! I thought Yokem did well as the closed minded redneck, and of course, Lucas was outstanding! his southern accent is genuine, he was born raised in the deep south.

Awesome character portrayal. Lucas Black has a substantial part and shines indeed as the poor and lonely kid from the boondocks who yearns for a happy life and fatherly guidance. The focus is strongly on his relationship with Karl and how both of them try to make the best out of their miserable lives. Shot in Arkansas.

Hard to believe Billy Bob Thornton is Karl. He does an excellent job in acting the part. I do not think anyone could have done it better. Lucas Black is outstanding in his part as well. His character could easily have called Karl plenty of names, but he accepts Karl to an extent I do not believe I would ever see again.
