Well made movie, although Asa didn't seem to stand out.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10A wonderful, magical, enchanting film. Asa Butterfield lights up the screen with his performance.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Asa Butterfield is wonderful to look at, but this movie is incredibly boring.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Really loved this film, and Asa was great.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10From the point of view of breathtaking cinema this film was magnificent; but as the 'Telegraph' critic wrote, it had a 'largely immobile plot'. Asa Butterfield was, of course, heartwarming as Hugo and looks better now he's a little older. We had to put up with the ubiquitous Chloe Grace Moretz who played her part well enough but do any other girl actors get a look-in when she's around? I thought the plot tended to meander and go off track especially with regard to the station inspector who was a complete idiot and didn't come across as all that funny. The set of the station clock was excellent with all it's whirring cogwheels and pendulums. I award my stars for that and Asa's wonderful performance. However, the combination of those cannot overcome this film's lack of coherent plot.
My Movie Rating: 7 / 10Amazing film! Actually two movies in one

Based on the 500+ page graphic novel, this movie clocks in at 2.5 hours, though the central mystery is resolved long before that. It seems that once a director becomes enough of a "name," the studios are hesitant to tell him to cut down the running time.
Both leads come from rather posh backgrounds which I think explains why some see their acting as artificial -- they have a lot of training, so their performances lack a certain authentic spark. Butterfield has a striking appearance that always commands attention. Moretz is a minor talent who even in 2011 was clearly being cultivated as a future Hollywood star.
The story itself is interesting and serves as a solid introduction to film history for children.
