Clément (2001)

Good but a downer. There were several points where I thought that there was no way they could make this movie if the main character was a man instead of a woman. For instance, Marion making out with Clement between the bushes at his school. Jealousy was a big theme in the movie which is not something I enjoy. The characters were annoyingly wishy washy always changing their mind. But, they dealt with the subject manner without too much moralizing or vilification of Marion so that boosts my rating. The unconventional manner of filming is a little disarming at first but ends up working successfully. I would probably not watch again but I'm glad I did at least once. Oh and Clement is gorgeous.

D.A.R.Y.L. (1985)

I have to agree with bowser, Barret Oliver is a very fine actor. The first half of the movie is quite good and more interesting than the action-heavy second part.

Dekigokoro (1933)

Enjoyable silent film that provides a glimpse into the life of working-class Tokyo in the 30s. The father and son have great chemistry.

Dennis the Menace (1993)

This is a charming, slapstick film with a lovely Mason Gamble in the lead. A bit of an ode to an Americana that was slipping away by the early 90s. Kids roaming the neighborhood in the summer, middle class towns not yet gutted, gender roles that are humorously mocked or subverted without the patronizing didacticism of 21st century media.

I do wonder why movies of this era felt the need to shoehorn in the robbery subplots? Take that out, give us more exposition of Mr. Wilson getting to know Dennis (apparently he taught him how to tie knots), and this might be a 9/10.

My favorite is the opening scene!

The Desperate Hours (1955)

A quality film noir, with a phenomenal performance from Eyer who shines even alongside the luminaries in the rest of the cast. You may find yourself yelling at the screen as Papa Hilliard bumbles and fumbles his way through escape and rescue efforts, but that's all part of the fun.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (2017)

I'm not a huge fan of this series, but caught this movie on TV and thought the negative reviews weren't warranted. Jason Drucker is quite charming in the title role and there are a few funny moments such as the Psycho homage.

Dick Tracy (1990)

Director Warren Beatty does a stunning job of capturing the look and feel of a comic strip in a live action film. There is a tongue-in-cheek absurdity that infuses everything from the dialogue to the set pieces. The Kid with his dramatic freckles and bright red newsboy cap, and his devotion to Tracy, steals the show, but Pacino as the philosophizing failure of a mob leader and Tess are also highlights. Madonna sings well here and this role is probably just about the entire bandwidth of her acting ability. She is passable until the last scene, which devolves into laugh out loud territory.

Dolphin Tale (2011)

I would give it a higher rating, but in the last half hour or so the writing really slips. The character conflicts evaporate as they quickly wrap up the story. Sawyer's relationship with his older cousin could have been more developed. I did like the last scene and I agree with others about the positive message and themes.

Double Jeopardy (1999)

A fun thriller if you are willing to suspend disbelief on many fronts, but not much screen time for the boys. Weir's performance stands out.
