Delightful. The DDR always made such good kids' films. God bless DEFA!

My Family and Other Animals (2005)

Perhaps not quite as good as the 1987 TV miniseries, but a superb film realisation nonetheless. One pleasing thing about this movie is that Gerald (Eugene Simon) goes practically feral by the end - wearing just a pair of shorts and covered in a layer of dirt.

Nicholas Nickleby (2002)

Actually, having watched it a second time (on blu-ray this time) my estimation of this film has gone up. It is a gorgeously colourful and good-looking production, Charlie Hunnam certainly has the wide-eyed innocence necessary to his character, and Jamie Bell makes a charming Smike. Most enjoyable.

Oddballs (1984)

Surprisingly good! A fun movie from a more relaxed era, before Political Correctness and modern Puritanism. Recommended!

El Orfanato (2007)

An engaging mystery and a serious, cerebral 'ghost story' with a poignant conclusion.

Le P'tit curieux (2004)

Not at all what I was expecting, which was something a little fluffier... Fluffy, this is not! I like the conceit of the film, which is that a child naturally thinks that the adults have the answers and he's frustrated because it seems that they are hiding the answers from him. Clément gradually learns that actually the grown-ups are pretty miserable much of the time. Writer/director Jean Marboeuf deserves credit for portraying a nine year old's thoughts without the sentimentalising lens through which most adults view children. Milan Argaud completely steals the show as young Clément. N.B. A lot of the entertainment of the film arises out of word play, so fluency in French would be helpful.

Le Petit poucet (2001)

A wonderful cinematic realisation of a fairy tale. The French do this kind of thing so well! Highly recommended.

Rascals and Robbers (1982)

A charming homage to Twain's characters. Patrick Creadon and Anthony Michael Hall are both excellent.

Revolution (1985)

The version I saw was the Director's ('Revisited') Cut. The actors are great, Sid Owen is a very handsome lad, the battle scenes are excellent, the scenery is gritty, dirty and realistic, and as a story of love between a father and son it is quite moving. Donald Sutherland's character is quite nuanced and his relationship with his drummer boy Ben does something to counter-balance the character of Lord Darling. On the negative side, it felt downright peculiar seeing the not-so-attractive Dexter Fletcher replace Owen as Ned in the last half hour of the movie. But overall, this movie is very much worth seeing.

Sam (1973-1975)

There isn't an awful lot of Sam in Season One of "Sam" - most of the scenes are of adults talking to each other in domestic settings, with young Sam just popping up every now and then. The characters spend a great deal of time whinging about how tough their general conditions of life are in their historical era. You know, I can't STAND whingers. Kevin Moreton is a personable young actor whose quiet, sensitive, understated presence in the first season is certainly a pleasure to watch in between the adults moaning about their lives and raising their voices at each other. Possibly, though, he is just a touch too reserved and doesn't leave enough of an impression, though this may also be down to the screenwriting. For me, Sam's maternal grandfather Jack (played by Michael Goodliffe) was the standout character from this first season - though he's not a particularly attractive character!

Simon and the Witch (1987-1988)

A series where all the sympathetic child characters are male, and where the boys do not spend all their time gazing at the girls in adoration (quite the contrary!)...in other words, a series made before identity politics took over the BBC and its programming output turned to crap. Elizabeth Spriggs makes a wonderful witch, all the boy actors are great, and Hugh Pollard clicks his heels beautifully in the closing credit sequence.

Svolochi (2006)

An affirmation of the human value of friendship within the context of a bleak (and I would say truthful) vision of human behaviour (i.e. the victors in WWII were not necessarily morally much better than the vanquished - think of the orgy of rape and murder by the Red Army during the invasion of Berlin, the wanton destruction of cities, the dropping of the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki...). Director Aleksandr Atanesian would have done better not to claim that his film was historically accurate - a marketing ploy that was easily exposed - but this should not obscure the moral truth that the movie embodies. The youthful actors are all superb, and the cinematography is gorgeous.
