Dva Fyodora (1958)

A very beautiful and moving story with characters that seem absolutely real - one feels one knows them - and amazing acting from the principal actors. It doesn't get much better than this - a classic of Soviet cinema.

Dva lidi v zoo (1989)

A fine comedy concerning the mischievous antics of identical twins. The cast are superb, the boys are completely natural actors, and the whole movie - and the boys - are an utter delight. Highly recommended.

The Escape Artist (1980)

Audiences at the time of its release were slightly baffled, but this is actually a stunning multi-layered poetic masterpiece, about the burning love of a boy for his dead father, and about his own search for independence, and recognition from the adult world. Griffin O'Neal was just 15 when he played Danny Masters in this movie (though the film wasn't released for another couple of years), in a performance which John Holmstrom ("The Moving Picture Boy", p. 351) called "one of the screen's greatest boy performances". Watch out for former boy star Jackie Coogan as the owner of the Magic Shop, as well as performances from former 'Dead End Kids' Huntz Hall and Gabriel Dell. Unmissable!

Eu Me Lembro (2005)

An extraordinary multi-award-winning masterpiece about the childhood, youth and young manhood of young Guiga growing up in Salvador in Brazil. Delivered with a kind of total candour and lucidity, to create a vivid portrait of the protagonist and his world, as he grows into an adult strongly influenced by the countercultural currents of the 1970s. One of the finest ever films in the coming-of-age genre. Coming from Brazil, this film also displays a frank recognition of juvenile sexuality.

Évolution (2015)

A fascinating, multi-layered film, very eerie, with some stunning underwater cinematography. The more I view this film, the more I love it.

The Famous Five (1995-1997)

Enid Blyton's oeuvre is hardly great literature, but as an adaptation of her stories it is hard to imagine this production being bettered (hence the 10 stars). Paul Child is particularly personable, and there are some great boys making appearances here and there in the series. Sniffer (Lee Turnbull) is brilliant in the episode "Five Go to Mystery Moor" - the handkerchief always cracks me up (you'll have to view the episode to see what I mean!).

The Genesis Children (1972)

I'm surprised at the negative reviews of this movie. Some people have no aesthetic taste at all. The beautiful Italian countryside, gorgeous music, breathtaking cinematography, a portrait of life in Italy before the ravages of globalisation reduced everywhere to drab capitalist uniformity, and a philosophical storyline which ponders how man lost Eden... An absolutely unique film that could not have been made at any other time than the precise time it was produced. A total classic which repays multiple viewings.

Gostya iz budushchego (1985)

Gorgeous. It proceeds at an unhurried pace, but by episode 3 I was hooked. When it ended, I wished it could have gone on forever, and I was already missing it. Aleksei Fomkin was most likeable as the male lead, Kolya. The closing credits are also accompanied by the most wonderful theme tune of all time, which will make you wish you were back in the 1980s.

Kes (1969)

One of the greatest boy movies ever. David ('Dai') Bradley is forever immortalised as Billy Casper. (He was a fine actor, and continued to show how superb he was in films and TV series of the 70s, such as "The Jensen Code".) Brian Glover also gives a terrific performance. An absolute must-see.

The Land of the Enlightened (2016)

Brilliant. The director doesn't heroise (or demonise) anyone, but presents a portrait of people struggling in their various ways to survive and flourish under conditions made worse by constant invasion and occupation by foreign powers, of which the Americans are only the most recent example.

Léolo (1992)

Sheer cinematic poetry. A nearly flawless masterpiece. Indeed, the only flaw in the film is the hideously cruel treatment of a cat in one scene, for which the director deserves to be soundly horsewhipped.

The Little Rascals (1955)

I really don't know why Hal Roach is not always recognised as the genius he undoubtedly was. From 1922 to 1938 (when he handed the 'Our Gang' format to MGM and the whole thing immediately went downhill) Roach's studios churned out an astonishing stream of masterpieces (169 in all). The sheer inventiveness of these little films is amazing. And this inventiveness was unencumbered by political correctness and the desire (asserted under MGM) to teach the viewers a moral lesson (which always kills art). Boys like Mickey Daniels and Carl ('Alfalfa') Switzer were GIANTS. Their memory and their talent should last as long as the human race.
