Buenos días resistencia (2013)

Yes, the Hispanophone countries constantly show their cultural superiority to the wretched 'Anglosphere'. Well worth watching.

Ciske de Rat (1955)

An interesting contrast with the '84 film, but works very well in its own terms. Highly recommended.

Claws (1982)

I've read a lot of unfavourable reviews of this film online, but so far as I'm concerned they're all wrong. Perhaps the problem is that this film is advertised as though it's a 'horror' movie (it isn't), when in fact it is a fine coming-of-age drama about a boy learning to overcome his fears and justify his father's trust in him. Jason Roberts is completely convincing in the lead role.

Crime School (1938)

Probably my favourite of the Dead End Kids movies (though they're all excellent!).

Dead End (1937)

A great movie, though I'm probably rather biased, since I love the Dead End Kids, and this movie is where it all started. The fact that this is no ordinary Hollywood movie is signalled in the first few seconds where - somewhat to our shock - a woman craftily steals a piece of food from a small infant. The architect character clearly represents the view of the writer. Rather than renovating the buildings and transferring ownership of the homes to their tenants, his dearest wish is to tear down the 'slums' and shove the inhabitants into 'modern' apartment blocks...Yes, and social engineers like him were to finally have their way in the 1960s, with social consequences with which we are now all too familiar - destroying close-knit working class communities and leaving youngsters to drift into crime and drug use.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010)

Most enjoyable. One of those comedies that is pretty much amusing throughout. Recommended.

Dickens of London (1976)

Roy Dotrice is particularly wonderful as John Dickens, Charles' father (who was the model for Macawber), and Simon Bell is a very likeable young Charles - a completely natural actor. The miniseries is not, perhaps, perfect - episode 11 ("Nightmare") is rather peculiar and feels almost like a 'filler' episode - but on the whole this is an illuminating and unique production.

Don Bosco (1988)

Probably the better of the two movies made about Saint Don Bosco and his ragazzi (the other one being the 2004 movie, also in this database).

En Sabana Grande siempre es de día (1988)

Utterly wonderful. Why isn't there a beautiful remastered version of this on a Criterion Collection blu-ray? To think of the sheer unadulterated crap that gets the royal treatment (Guy Maddin, anyone?) when there are gems like this slipping below the radar...dear me.

Escape Into Night (1972)

Catherine Storr's story is forever immortalised in this TV adaptation. And although it's always sad when the original colour footage of a TV series is destroyed, it has to be said that the black-and-white telerecording does give the series a timeless quality. Steven Jones is just wonderful as the pajama-clad Mark.

Fortress (1985)

A riveting thriller, but with a moral depth unusual for this genre. Stars the very handsome Sean Garlick. Highly recommended.

Goodbye Sam (2017)

Probably my personal favourite of Theo Taplitz's short films - simple, sweet, and charming - though I also particularly like "Sorry to Say", "Crap You!" and "The Mosquito".

Der Grüne Heinrich (1993)

I liked the portion in which Andreas Schmid starred, and I liked the whole movie. Visually rich and beautiful, the story is gently melancholic.

Delightful, pastoral comedy. It makes me wish I lived in Kummerow in the first decade of the 20th century...
