Dividing Bar

Millions (2004)

So many people who know me, including members here, have been desperately urging me to see this movie - and now I know why! This is very close to perfection in making a movie with a genuine positive theme. Everything fits and everything works: the acting, direction, music score, writing - everything.

The fantasy elements work movingly because of the truth and sincerity of the boys acting and are only carefully enhanced by the photography and direction. the spiritual 'visitations' are done with intelligence and humor and warmth that is miles from mawkishness. My heart went out to both boys, despite a relative's remark "how could such a boy have such a big brother!" Some people just don't understand boys; their parts were written superbly. I dare not say more.

I loved the music score which supported all and was not intrusive. And it is always a relief not to be subjected to electric guitars and screaming 'singers.'

La Misma luna (2007)

I suspect there was a subliminal political message in there somewhere, but, ignoring that, I took Carlito's human story very much to heart.

(I can't believe I enjoyed a non-english speaking movie more than Zab did!)

Morte a Venezia (1971)

A sad parable of repression.

I also found the film heavily padded and slow. I would have edited 25 minutes, easily. Any director unable to establish a scene or set a mood in less than five minutes is simply wasting film and boring audiences.

Exceptional acting from the two boys. Matthew McConaughey and Sam Shepard were impressive as well. Very good script.

I WAS hoping that the boys would go swimming, but...ah, well.
