How Green Was My Valley (1941)
Sentimental filmmaking raised to an art. One of the most moving boy performances ever.
(if anyone's interested, the wonderful sonorous voice of the narrator belongs to Irving Pichel who had a rich and varied career as actor and director. I only mention this because it took me 30 years to find out who the heck the narrator was. One of his directed films, by the way, was DESTINATION MOON.)
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10The Indian in the Cupboard (1995)
Movie was criticized for too many full screen closeups of Hal's Face. I sure didn't mind. Hal gives a true and sweet portrayal of a boy confronted with magic. Frank Oz & his film deserved much better than they got.

So many people who know me, including members here, have been desperately urging me to see this movie - and now I know why! This is very close to perfection in making a movie with a genuine positive theme. Everything fits and everything works: the acting, direction, music score, writing - everything.
The fantasy elements work movingly because of the truth and sincerity of the boys acting and are only carefully enhanced by the photography and direction. the spiritual 'visitations' are done with intelligence and humor and warmth that is miles from mawkishness. My heart went out to both boys, despite a relative's remark "how could such a boy have such a big brother!" Some people just don't understand boys; their parts were written superbly. I dare not say more.
I loved the music score which supported all and was not intrusive. And it is always a relief not to be subjected to electric guitars and screaming 'singers.'
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Mondo (1995)
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10The Mosquito Coast (1986)
One of a kind film and the boys are wonderful.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Møv og Funder (1991)
Convincingly told tale of trust and friendship between 2 seemingly unlikely people. Kasper Andersen is a charming young actor - and with eyes to die for.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Night of the Hunter (1955)
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10El Orfanato (2007)
An excellent, complex supernatural entry which has some very heart-tugging moments.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Rang-e khoda (1999)
I can't find the words. I agree - it is indeed a masterpiece. Profoundly moving.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10The Rocking Horse Winner (1949)
A modern gothic fairy tale that is eerie and compelling. J.H. Davies is appealing and very convincing as the driven, pathetic youngster. He was a fine young actor.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Scrooge (1951)
This is one of the finer movies I've seen in a lifetime. The screenplay adds touches I think Dickens himself would have loved. Perfectly conceived and acted. IMO the 2nd finest screen treatment of a Dickens story, the first being David Lean's 'Great Expectations.'
