The Bus Stop (2015)

Quite good short film of boyhood friendship developing despite the prejudices of their parents. Good acting from Max and Bryce.

Les choristes (2004)

A fine French film though relying on a predictable plotline. Jean-Baptiste Maunier is not only good looking but quite a good singer, too. He plays his part well as do the adult actors. Enchanting and moving. The film is set in 1949 so the scene where the boys are reading through Clement Mathieu's music sheets in the toilets and Mathieu comes in to retrieve them and then is accused of coming on to the boys in a sexual way would not have occurred at that time. Such matters weren't even thought about then.

The DVD extra showing how the film was made and interviewing the boys was almost as good as the film itself!

The Client (1994)

Brad Renfro does very well in this thriller movie and his relationship with the female lawyer, (Susan Sarandon), is both serious and funny. Mark Sway is a boy who has had it rough and being fatherless, considers himself the man of the family. Renfro is definitely worthy of an Oscar rating for his performance.

D.A.R.Y.L. (1985)

A typical all-American movie in which Barret Oliver is very good in his part as the boy robot, Daryl. Not only his acting but the fact Barret has the looks of an intelligent boy adds much to the part. The plot is far fetched to say the least but, overlooking that, the film has much of interest in it.

One might wonder why Daryl, who is a robot after all, has to be dressed when he's on the slab in the science laboratory. Also, thank heavens they didn't cast Danny Corkill in the lead who had a tendency to mumble his lines sometimes.

Dear Frankie (2004)

A charming film with Frankie excellently played by Jack McElhone. The woman director manages to steer the film away from over sentimentality and instead provides us with an endearing tale of a young deaf boy and his loving mother. It is possible the plotline could come in for some criticism as being slightly implausible. Nicely filmed and nicely acted all round.

Delivering Milo (2000)

Another of those strange films with a supernatural setting. Milo, played by Anton Yelchin, is a kid who doesn't want to be born which sets off all sorts of repercussions up in Heaven. I thought Anton played his part quite well and it is an engaging little story about a boy learning the meaning of life and what it's all about. One thing, I wonder who was on the other end of Mr Gordon's phone? Albert Finney is marvellous as the high spirited though calculating soul from limbo. We could have done with less of the close-ups of Bridget Fonda!

Der Untergang (2004)

An excellent and realistic portrayal of Hitler by Bruno Ganz. I suppose this dramatic film does just scrape in as a boy movie with poor Peter played by Donevan Gunia going through horrors no boy should have to witness. I wonder if the ending was true where Traudl Junge goes off on a bike with Peter sitting on the handlebars?

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010)

Absolutely hilarious and a wonderful performance by Zachary Gordon in the lead role as Greg the put upon kid who goes through all the problems of childhood. The dialogue was sharp and witty with Robert Capron and Grayson Russell giving great support. A long time since I've seen a boy movie as funny as this one.

In similar vein was 'How To Eat Fried Worms' BUT unlike that film, The Diary is poor on DVD extras. Only some deleted scenes. NO director's commentary and worse NO interviews with the actors or even a 'making of' feature. For that I have to deduct half a point and also half a point off for casting chubby Capron. All boy actors should be slim good-lookers. So, instead of 8 stars I can only give it 7.

Doogie Howser, M.D. (1989-1993)

I enjoyed nearly all the episodes of this series with Neil Patrick Harris looking quite attractive and ably supported by Max Cassella who played his best friend Vinny and who was around 20 when Dougie MD was made. Good series and oh so American.

Die Drei ??? - Das Geheimnis der Geisterinsel (2007)

A German/South African production with American boy actors. Obviously no expense was spared in the production costs as there is some fine photography in 'Skeleton Island'. This is matched by some fine acting from the three boys involved and all relatively unknown it seems. I guess this film was made for straight to DVD. I think it was Cameron Monaghan, he of the curly ginger hair and massed freckles, who said the producers had searched for boy actors in Britain and South Africa but couldn't find suitable kids before coming to the good old U S of A ... so now we know. Plenty of action, boyish humour in a rollicking tale of adventure.

Enemy at the Gates (2001)

A very realistic war movie depicting the carnage at Stalingrad. Despite the unnecessary drag on the plot by Jude Law's romancing, the battle scenes and sniping suspense is kept to a high standard. Gabriel Marshall-Thomson's character of Sacha, the boy runaround/boot polisher, who serves both the Russians and the Germans was playing a dangerous game and I'm not surprised he came to a sticky end. (How could Ed Harris have done such a thing?)I had never seen this boy actor before. I'm sure Krushchev was not quite the villain shown nor did the Russian army shoot it's own retreating soldiers.

Entrusted (2003)

A long movie of over three hours mysteriously made for Dutch television. Any feature of this length will test the acting abilities of a boy and Thomas Sangster meets the challenge with equable aplomb! The plot is a bit daft with the boy having to memorise Jewish bank account numbers to keep them from the Nazis. However, there is plenty of adventure and action as the boy makes his way to Switzerland to give over his information. Where would we be without good old neutral Switzerland? Perhaps we should take a leaf out of their book and learn how to stay out of wars. I just wonder what made the Dutch choose a British boy actor instead of one of their own?

A Father for Charlie (1995)

I think 'High Lonesome' must have been made for TV. The plot is a bit sugary though I think how it portrays the attitude of white people to blacks in 1930s America pretty authentic. Joseph Mazzello is, of course, excellent as the tough kid the black man takes under his wing despite his high pitched voice. The ending is rather contrived I think as I doubt any black man would be allowed to adopt white children at that time. Good movie that brings a tear to the eye.

Frailty (2001)

A great film with splendid performances from both Matt O'Leary and Jeremy Sumpter (best looking boy actor ever - want proof? - see 'Peter Pan'). Two boys and a dotty dad who goes around murdering innocent people because God has told him they are demons. Most out of character to see cute Jeremy whacking someone with an axe. One of the better horror movies featuring boy actors.

Geppetto (2000)

A fine performance from Seth Adkins in this delightful film. His infectious laugh and overall cuteness mixed with a bit of boyish daring make him an ideal Pinocchio. The songs are passable, though one might not say that about Drew Carey's singing. A good take on the story from a different angle, namely how Geppetto puts up with his little wooden 'son'. A good supporting cast with Brent Spiner playing the villain and Rene Auberjonois as the professor who makes kids to order. I thought Christopher Marquette who played his son did well in his relatively small part. Very brief appearance by Anton Yelchin.

Getting Even with Dad (1994)

An interesting and funny movie with Macaulay Culkin excellent as the know-all Timmy who busts in on his Dad's crime caper. Good support from Gailard Sartain and Saul Rubinek as the bumbling crooks. Lots of laughs with the occasional heartwarming relationship between father and son.

Gladiator (2000)

A sweeping, glorious movie with gore and blood which one would expect from its title but lots of emotion and adventure as well. Spencer Treat Clark is fine, too, when he's on the screen. He doesn't have that big a part as the Emperor's son. I was half expecting 'Gladiator' not to be listed as it barely counts as a boy film but I'm glad it had been included.

Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939)

Nobody reviewed this boy film classic? It is a tender story if possibly a little sentimental for today's taste. A teacher inviting boys in for tea and cake might be regarded as suspect but this was the days when such stupid attitudes, fortunately, didn't exist. Robert Donat is wonderfully aged as Mr Chipping and Terry Kilburn is the perfect cheeky schoolboy of those times.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001)

Once Daniel Radcliffe put on his glasses he was made for this part. Along with Rupert Grint, as his friend and sidekick, this is a wonderful boy film and must be one of the most famous. However, Tom Felton playing the nasty Draco was also rather noticeable with his attractive blond hair. It would have been good to see him and Harry Potter having a young wizard battle with their wands and magic. A well made film although Radcliffe came under criticism for a somewhat wooden performance. However, I was so enchanted by him I failed to notice.

Hearts in Atlantis (2001)

Great acting from Anton Yelchin as the boy, Bobby Garfield, befriended by the mysterious lodger (Hopkins). Just who or what the man, Ted, is isn't often very clear. Neither are the shadowy figures wandering around. The story is set in the sixties when the mother's ridiculous reaction to Ted helping the young girl when she has been injured just wouldn't have happened.
