Cotolay (1966)

Whaaaat, no reviews of this movie having as it does the splendiferous talents of His French Cinematic Highness, Didier Haudepin no less?

Well, I was at a disadvantage for a start being that my knowledge of Spanish was zilch and no subtitles were provided. I just had to try and pick up on the plot as the film went along. Didier was his usual charming self as the kind, happy Cotolay. The friars certainly took a liking to him ... ! Unfortunately Didier, wonderful boy actor though he is, couldn't lift this film from the dregs surrounded as he was by adult actors of the strictly wooden variety. Didier, just striking puberty, looked great in his tunic and short skirt.

One off-putting note was the possibility that Didier's voice was dubbed and possibly by a girl!

I award the film one star but Didier makes up for the other five!

CrissCross (1992)

Not a great movie and not helped by slightly wooden acting from David Arnott. I don't suppose because a boy actor LOOKS great (like when he's riding around on his bike in those cut off shorts) that he should be awarded more stars but David certainly comes high in that area. The plot is pure Americana and I can understand why Arnott didn't make any more films. Apparently, Goldie Hawn had three boys to choose from to work with her and she chose David. Good choice.

Danny the Champion of the World (1989)

Not the greatest of boy films but still enjoyable although lacking any of Roald Dahl's usual dark side to his stories. The real life boy and father play well against each other. I had never seen Samuel Irons in a film before. This one is almost idyllic with the villain, Robbie Coltrane, hamming up his part as the evil landowner. Good fun and pleasant.

Dark Skies (2013)

Dakota Goyo looked and acted great in 'Dark Skies' as did Kadan Rockett but the film was somewhat flawed in its plotline. The prejudiced neighbours never seemed to enquire as to why the birds only flew into the Barrett's house or why none of them noticed the bright lights when the aliens were trying to gain entry into the Barrett's household. Horror is always at its best when it takes place in some remote area and not in an urban street where you know other people are only a stone's throw away. Also there was no interview in the DVD extras with Dakota. Boo.

The Day The World Ended (2001)

Bobby Edner - who he? I had never seen or heard of this boy actor before seeing this film directed by an Englishman, Terence Gross. I thought Edner played his part well and, yes, the alien was a bit daft. I wondered if the ending was making way for a sequel.

Dennis the Menace (1993)

One of those cute-as-a-button American movies with Mason Gamble acting exactly that. He is ably supported by veteran actor, Walter Matthau, who is wonderful as the grouchy neighbour. Also Christopher Lloyd as the menacing tramp make this a decent film.

Desperate Measures (1998)

Plenty of action, in fact rather too much as the hospital is all but destroyed as homicidal Michael Keaton goes on the rampage. Joseph Cross plays his somewhat short part well as the little boy desperately in need of a bone marrow transplant. The whole thing is over the top but enjoyable all the same.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2011)

Not as good as the first film. The older brother was always an irritating character anyway so why make him the star of this sequel?

Eerie, Indiana (1991-1992)

This show started off quite well with some interesting, comical plotlines but lost steam in the later episodes. In fact, it only ran for 19 of them! Great performances from Omri Katz and Justin Shenkarow of course.

Empire of the Sun (1987)

A boy movie on a truly epic scale with Christian Bale acting his heart out in so many different and demanding situations on an actor. A grand adventure but, I agree, possibly a trifle too long.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011)

I rate this film mainly for Thomas Horn's marvellous acting. The plot verged on the ridiculous and the boy, Oskar, seemed at times the sort of obnoxious brat the old man (good performance from veteran, Max von Sydow) should've shoved off the bridge. Wondering if Oskar possibly suffered from some autistic-type syndrome, I noted he did a lot of screaming, swearing and running about - but what for? He treated the doorman and the old man like - in his words - "shit". The film has had generally poor reviews mainly regarding the plot of a boy followed by his mother knocking on doors all over New York. However, for a newcomer, Thomas Horn has shown great acting ability. He carried the film extremely well and incredibly confidently but was let down by the unbelievable storyline.

Fido (2006)

'Fido' has a different take on the old boy and his dog routine. This time it's boy and his zombie! Fido is the zombie played by Billy Connolly in an uncharacteristic part. Timmy, the boy, is played wonderfully well by the unusually named K'Sun Ray whom I thought at first was an Asian boy. Nope, K'Sun is Canadian and another of these obscure boy actors that seem to emanate so often from Canada.

The film is good and the humour rolls along pretty well even if there are some horrific scenes in it. K'Sun Ray is superb at portraying the sad, winsome kid with a neglectful father and an eccentric mother and everything taking place in fifties America. This era is captured perfectly in the attitudes of those days particularly in respect of the zombies regarded as a necessary but inferior species.

I keep wondering if things might have been improved if Billy Connolly had been allowed to speak instead of grunting throughout the film. He does speak but only in the DVD's bloopers when he says the F word on set and in front of K'Sun, too.

A funny film with good period detail and well worth adding to your DVD collection.

First Kid (1996)

Brock Pierce is relatively unknown in boy acting circles but he managed to bring on a fine performance as the privileged but lonely son of the US president. Together with Sinbad playing his bodyguard, the two provide some hilarious moments though one or two cringing ones as well.

Fisherman's Wharf (1939)

A real vintage movie and it shows on the DVD I have! Bobby Breen, while not a particularly good looking boy being upstaged by the better looking Tommy Bupp in that department, sings beautifully however. His rendering of 'Ave Maria' is specially notable. The relationship between him and his spoiled brat of a cousin (Bupp) is well handled by the director. This is pure nostalgia, with hammy Italian acting and poor orphan boy makes good. Can't beat it.

Flipper (1996)

A nice story with plenty of American ham in it. Elijah Wood and Paul Hogan play well off each other as sulky teenager and worldwise uncle. The plot is pure schmaltz but Elijah looks good in the water!

Le gamin au vélo (2011)

The boy was great but why would a young woman take such an interest in looking after him? Was it me or did this movie just come to an abrupt end?

George's Island (1989)

A fairly good film with a host of eccentric characters in it. Nathaniel Moreau was good, of course, but Maury Chaykin, playing the man from Children's Services, was also good. Comical and at times heart rending, 'George's Island' is a pleasant watch but no more than that.

Good Boy! (2003)

Liam Aiken is charming as Owen the boy who befriends the know-all dog from another planet. Obviously appealing to doggy lovers the film does, at least, get away from the usual sentimental schmaltz of so many boy/dog films. This one injects humour into its canine stars and this, coupled with Liam's great acting, saves the day as it were.

The Good Son (1993)

Good to see a film with both Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood in it. As other members have referred, Elijah ran rings round Macaulay acting-wise. Quite suspenseful in parts but once Henry had caused that cars crash was the time for his pretty dumb parents to have him certified. When they were fighting I wanted the dad to put them in shorts and boxing gloves and get them out of all that frumpy clothing. Bit short at 83 minutes and - boo - no extras on the DVD.
