Emil und die Detektive (1931)

A classic of early children's cinema. Benjamin Britten, who wrote a lot of wonderful music for boys' voices, said that this was "the most perfect and satisfying" film he had ever seen.

Emil und die Detektive (1954)

Pretty good, worthwhile remake of the 1931 classic based on Erich Kastner's book.

Some fun moments but can't hold a candle to the originals.

Empire of the Sun (1987)

Tom Stoppard script adapted from J.G. Ballard's book (which is quite heavily fictionalised). Christian Bale gives a star-making performance and the wonderful singing of James Rainbird is heard in two key scenes.

En mai, fais ce qu'il te plaît (2015)

Following Merry Christmas, another shiny, soapy, sentimental war film from Christian Carion.

En tu ausencia (2008)

Works its way through a series of archetypes with a certain originality and quiet flair. The subplot involving the main character's slightly older female friend is unusual and sympathetically handled. The movie is nearly unique in the close and affectionate way it focuses on its boy actors.

Ender's Game (2013)

I think Ender's Game and Songmaster are the best things Card ever wrote. It's really impossible to make a good and faithful film adaptation of either, for many reasons. This turns out to be, and really must have set out to be, more of a riff on the story told in the novel than an adaptation. It's solid and enjoyable though, with some nice battleroom and simulator action sequences. Asa Butterfield's somewhat limited acting range is a little too apparent at times; Aramis Knight in the role of Bean is the standout for me.

Une enfance (2015)

Loosely structured but hangs together well and even manages to carry off a 400 Blows tribute in the ending scene. Alexi Mathieu gives a wonderful performance.

Good and interesting movie drawing from Itard's records. Truffaut's own acting is a little wooden.
