Boychoir (2014)

Really absurd film that knows nothing about choral music and about boys' singing in particular. Does benefit hugely from the singing of the American Boychoir -- now sadly defunct -- and the charisma of Garrett Wareing.

Boyhood (2014)

Other films have done what Boyhood does. The 2013 documentary American Promise follows two boys' entire education at a very prestigious school, the 2007 documentary You're Not Splitting Up My Family follows two boys' involvement with the care system over ten years, and the 1994 documentary Hoop Dreams follows two aspiring basketball players over their four years of high school. And once you take away the supposed uniqueness of how it was made, there just isn't a whole lot to this film. Also, the 2016 short film Boys is much better as an observational slice of all-American boyhood.

Brand Upon the Brain! (2006)

Truly bizarre, but impressive. Director clearly very taken with surrealism & German expressionism. Go to the source material first -- see The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, Nosferatu, The Last Laugh and The Seashell and the Clergyman.

Breakfast with Scot (2007)

Decent, but the 1978 film Ang tatay kong nanay told this story first and told it better, which is no surprise, as it was directed by Lino Brocka, the Philippines' greatest director, who also gave us Manila in the Claws of Light, Bayan ko: Kapit sa patalim and Orapronobis. The excellent Chilean film Rara also deals much better with the subject of same-sex couples rearing children, and the excellent Peruvian film Retablo deals much better with the subject of homosexual parents generally.

Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

An OK adaptation of a wonderful book. I didn't really care for the CGI sequences that show us what the kids are imagining. Josh Hutcherson, however, elevates the film with his excellent acting.

Loosely inspired by To Kill a Mockingbird. Movingly portrays a father's love for his daughter.
