Well-made and worthy film about the Nazi Aktion T4 (murder of the disabled) programme, a rather neglected subject: this is the first and so far only film about it, and the Berlin memorial to the victims was only dedicated in 2014. Great acting from Ivo Pietzcker and his young fellow actors, especially Jule Hermann as his epileptic love interest. There's also a nice adult role for Henriette Confurius, who as a talented child actress starred in the superb Mein erstes Wunder and Ballett ist ausgefallen. Sophie Scholl: The Last Days was a very fine film but did contain some historical inaccuracies, which have been painstakingly documented by the White Rose Foundation. The documentation on Ernst Lossa is much less substantial, so the line between fact and fiction is less clear here: while the portrayal of Lossa as a lovable rapscallion with a heart of gold is certainly dramatically convenient, there's nothing in the historical record to contradict it. The script does get up to a bit of funny business with the timeline: Lossa is thirteen at the beginning of the story, fourteen at the end, but the end occurs in August 1944, and early on in the screenplay the doctor announces that while it will covertly continue, Aktion T4 is being officially suspended, and this suspension occurred in August 1941. On the other hand, many of the actors playing the disabled children actually had the relevant disabilities. And all factual quibbles aside, this is good and powerful cinema: like Berlin '36 and Aimee and Jaguar, it makes the minor liberties it takes with the real story work for it.
