Oliver Twist
(1948)
Country: UK
Genre: Drama
Synopsis
David Lean's prodigious adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic expands fervently on the theme of a lonely boy in a world of bullies. When the orphan hero, Oliver, escapes to London, the Artful Dodger delivers him to the notorious Fagan, who makes him part of the gang but soon allows for Oliver to take the fall for a bungled pickpocketing scam. To date, no movie has better captured Dickens's blend of sensitivity and violence.

Is this the most Dickensian of Dickens screen adaptations? I think so!
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Allowing for the time of its production, this is a well made version of the famous book. It omits to show Oliver's journey to London but makes up for it with some good location work made easier in 1948. John Howard Davies is very good as the vulnerable Oliver and looks elegant in his nineteenth century better off boy outfit.

Of the pre-1950s "Oliver Twist" movies this is by far the greatest of that time. John Howard Davies was not great; he was super great. I enjoyed every scenes he was in, from the very beginning and right to the end.
