Well, just to add my voice to the chorus of praise... This movie is essentially about a boy (Edmund, played by David Eberts) whose heart is broken by a man. All the actors (Klaus Maria Brandauer, Faye Dunaway, Ian Richardson) are completely wonderful, but David Eberts' performance is particularly outstanding. Add to this a gorgeous soundtrack, and an equally gorgeous setting and mise-en-scène, and you have the definitive version of Stefan Zweig's short story.

There was a German film (Brennendes Geheimnis, 1933) made of Zweig's story a very long time ago - and it was very good, and well worth watching. However, Andrew Birkin's film is so unutterably PERFECT in every respect that it is really impossible to imagine it ever being bettered. A masterpiece.

By Andrew Birkin, an expert on J. M. Barrie who also directed The Cement Garden and wrote the script for The Lost Boys.

This is an expertly made film. The costumes and scenery are exquisite and really transport you back to the post-WW1 period. David Eberts will win his way into your heart with his good looks and high pitched voice. The characters are more complicated than they might seem on the surface. The ambiguities in the relationships between the main characters, particularly the boy and the man are interesting. There is one scene that is a little over the top and too convenient from the narrative perspective but ultimately leads to a satisfying resolution. A great winter film.

David is simply gorgeous! and did an excellent job! I truely hope this wasn't the only thing he ever did as an actor! Faye Dunaway is a legend, her pinicle roll was as Joan Crawford in "Mommy Dearest"! that roll almost ruined her career by type casting her, I thought she did great in this movie, I saw Faye in Bonney and Clyde for the 1st time when I was around 10 years old and was instantly charmed by her! I may be the "Boymoviebuff", but I'm also a moviebuff in general! I like ALL kinds of movies and all kinds of actors, young, old, male and female! I just have a special place and fasination in my heart for boy actors!
