Synopsis
In 1948, 11 year old Volodya is sent by his mother to the city to advance his studies. The woman he is to live with can't afford to feed him properly. His French teacher learns about his difficult situation and tries to help, but Volodya's pride does not allow him to accept her help just like that. She then decides to help the boy by cunning, "giving in" to him in a game of chance. Unfortunately the school principal learns about the gambling and consequences ensue.
