Synopsis

When scientists pick up radio signals from a star system in the constellation of Cassiopeia indicating the presence of intelligent life, a project is set up, proposed by the young inventor Vitya Sereda, to send a starship to reach the planet that is the source of the radio signals. However, the flight will last for decades; and even given the effects of time dilation caused by travelling at near-light speed, the crew will age by a quarter of a century over the course of the journey. For this reason, the crew of the starship is to be recruited from young teens, so that they will be in the prime of life when the craft reaches its destination. The project is all carefully thought out, but student Fedya 'Lob' Lobanov, a boy with a seeming gift for causing mayhem, stows away aboard the starship and unwittingly causes it to transcend the speed of light so that it reaches its target a quarter of a century ahead of schedule...

Notes

The story of this film is continued and brought to a conclusion in its sequel, Otroki vo vselennoy (1975).
