The Trojan Women
(1971)
Synopsis
After the fall of their city, as the women of Troy await their fate, Andromache (Vanessa Redgrave), widow of the slain Hector and mother of his son Astyanax (Alberto Sanz), believes that she must raise her son in the war's aftermath. However, Talthybius, the messenger of the Greeks, comes to the ruined city to tell them that King Agamemnon and his brother Menelaus have decreed that Astyanax must die in order to ensure the extinction of the royal line.
Notes
- Based on the original play by the Greek tragedian Euripides (c. 480 - c. 406 BC), which was premiered in 415 BC, during the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC)
- The film was made with a minimum of changes to Edith Hamilton's 1937 translation of the play, save for the omission of deities - director Michael Cacoyannis explained that these would be "hard to film and make realistic".
