In this haunting, visionary work of English film, a pastor's son (Spencer Banks) with very fixed ideas about religion and politics is unsettled by the arrival of a socialist writer in his quiet Worcestershire village. The musical subplot and the heartfeltness -- it's based closely on David Rudkin's own growing up -- elevate this interesting, patchworky, slightly barmy piece.
