¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto?

AKA: What Have I Done To Deserve This?

Country: Spain

Genre: Black Comedy, Drama

The story of Gloria, a Spanish cleaning lady, and the interesting characters in her life. Her husband Antonio is trying to teach the art of forgery to his eldest son, 14-year-old Tony (Juan Martínez), as this talent will be his only inheritance from his father. Toni himself wants to become a farmer, and is saving up enough money to buy a farm - by peddling drugs! The younger son, Miguel (Miguel Ángel Herranz), who is twelve, sleeps around with older men. When Gloria confronts Miguel about this, Miguel responds: "I'm the master of my own body." Gloria's mother-in-law, who is addicted to fizzy water, dreams of returning to her native village. Gloria's friends are her two neighbours: Cristal - a prostitute with a heart of gold - and Juani - a bitter woman who is obsessed with cleanliness and vulgar ornaments. Juani's daughter Vanesa has telekinetic powers, which she uses to destroy their apartment. Gloria herself, with the help of her 'Pro Plus' caffeine pills to which she is addicted, endeavours to keep everything going through increasingly straitened circumstances, in this multi-award winning black comedy from the celebrated Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar.

I too found this quirky film delightful, although admittedly I had to consume it in small bites, repeating sections so that I could first just watch and listen, and then rewind and concentrate on the subtitles dialogue.

Even then the plot made little sense to me.

But when Miguel appeared on-screen... oh my! Dialogue and plot became secondary as he took charge not only of his body, but pretty much everyone around him. On reflection, he was the only Ďadultí in his family, and he had his much older lover firmly under his control.

Iíve never seen an intergenerational relationship portrayed so openly and non-judgmentally. And I doubt I ever will again in the current climate.

I was set to record this off of TCM on my DVR and Cap the streaming version from the TCM app, but the DVR recording failed and it was on the app for only a few days and I missed my window. Dang!

10 of 10 for me!

(Thank you bowser for the caps!)

My personal favourite Almodóvar film. The actors and characters are just wonderful. The attitude of Miguel's mother and family towards his decisions about his life are like a glimpse of a utopian world, and is yet another indication of the superiority of Spanish/Hispanic over Anglophone culture (though no doubt Spanish society has become more Anglo-puritan since this film was made). A gorgeous blu-ray from Studiocanal is now available, currently being sold by Amazon UK for a pittance (Region B, so customers outside Europe will need a multi-region player).
