Synopsis
Irena, a middle-aged single mother living with her 8-year-old son in cramped lodgings on the outskirts of Wroclaw in Western Poland, finds an apparent respite from her anxieties through her affair with crippled young miner Jacek. But as her financial situation worsens, her life rapidly spirals out of control.
Notes
- Directed by Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland (b. 1948), who also directed such films as "Europa Europa" (1990), Olivier, Olivier (1992), The Secret Garden (1993), and "Total Eclipse" (1995).
- Completed in 1981, this film was banned for several years by the Communist authorities in Poland for its social criticism, and was not transmitted on Polish television until September 1987 (having been screened earlier the same year at the New Directors/New Films Festival in New York). It subsequently won the Special Jury Prize at the 1988 Polish Film Festival.
