Synopsis

The lives of numerous people over the course of nearly 20 years in 19th century France are woven together, the common thread being the story of an ex-convict named Jean Valjean who is constantly on the run from an obsessive police inspector, Javert.

Based on the 1862 novel of the same name by French writer Victor Hugo (1802-1885)
This film is in three separate parts, with a total running time of around 4 3/4 hours.
The 'Masters of Cinema' (Region B/2) release of this film (Amazon UK links at top right of this page) includes as an 'extra' just under two minutes of screen tests of auditions for the role of Gavroche, featuring Sacha Tarride, Jean Mercanton and Robert Lynen, as well as the boy who won the role, ?mile Genevois.
