Synopsis

When, in the last days of the Second World War, 13-year-old Tom loses his mother, he decides to make his way to his aunt's home in Vienna. When he gets there, however, he finds his aunt's house an uninhabited ruin, and does not know what to do next. A one-legged war veteran nicknamed Kr?cke ('Crutch') becomes a good friend to the boy, and the two find shelter with a Jewish woman called Bronka, who sells alcohol to Allied soldiers and black market traders. Together, Tom and Kr?cke await the day when they can return to Germany.
