Two for Joy
(2018)
Country: UK
Genre: Drama
Synopsis
A portrait of modern Britain seen through the eyes of a family in crisis. In the wake of her husband's death, Aisha's struggle with her mental health is making home life increasingly unmanageable for her teenage daughter Vi and young adolescent son Troy (Badger Skelton). Vi has been forced to grow up fast, caring for her mother whilst also trying to look after Troy. With no father figure and mother-daughter roles reversed, Troy has become a law unto himself, excluded from school and spending his days cruising the estate or fishing the reservoir. The trio decide to take a trip to the coast, revisiting the caravan where they holidayed in happier times. There, they befriend the holiday park caretaker Lias, his unhinged sister Lillah and her daughter Miranda - a family in the midst of their own drama.
Notes
- The title of this film refers to an old nursery rhyme about magpies - traditionally, the number of magpies one sees together at a time foretells one's future. The version of the rhyme referenced by the film's title reads: "One for sorrow/Two for joy/Three for a girl/Four for a boy/Five for silver/Six for gold/Seven for a secret/Never to be told./Eight for a wish/Nine for a kiss/Ten for a bird/You must not miss." The image of a magpie in a cage is a recurring motif in this film.
