Synopsis
In the closing days of World War II, as truckloads of defeated, cynical Wehrmacht soldiers flee the approaching American troops, a group of seven schoolboys, full of enthusiasm for the Nazi ideology of blood and honour, stay behind to defend a small bridge in their home village.
Notes
- Based on the 1958 autobiographical novel of the same name by journalist and writer Gregor Dorfmeister (1929-2018). Dorfmeister, who wrote his novel under the pseudonym of Manfred Gregor, based his account on his own experience of service in the Volkssturm (People's Militia) late in the Second World War, during which he participated in defending two bridges against advancing American tanks - an experience which led to his becoming a pacifist.
- This film was the recipient of several awards, including the prizes for "Best Direction" and "Outstanding Feature Film" at the 1960 German Film Awards.
- A remake of this film, also called "Die Br?cke", was transmitted on German television in 2008.
