Synopsis
12-year-old James (Freddie Findlay) has a passion for science, and manufactures chemicals for his chemistry experiments from locally growing plants, such as the 'thornapple' (or 'jimsonweed' - a highly toxic member of the nightshade family). When cousin Mirabel comes to stay with the family, she gains the boy's trust and friendship, and learns about the jars of chemicals he keeps in his bedroom. Mirabel's aunt June, however, rejects her niece, because she disapproves of the fact that she purposefully had a child with a man without intending to marry him. However, when Mirabel suddenly and unexpectedly gets into aunt June's good books again - shortly before June dies leaving Mirabel a large sum of money in her will - James has his doubts as to the true cause of June's death.
